Bloggers Do BBQ – Dickey’s Barbecue Pit in Ferndale, MI

Dickey's Barbecue PitFor those of you not following me on Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter…Baby Alex arrived about 4 weeks ago and we’ve been busy adjusting to life as a family of seven.  SEVEN!  (Yeah, still coming to terms with that…)

Me and Allie

So last week, I was VERY excited to be getting out of the house for an outing that didn’t involve grocery shopping or a doctor’s visit.  Baby Alex and I took a drive up to Ferndale, MI and had dinner with some bloggy friends at Dickey’s Barbecue Pit.

Now, let me preface this by saying that I spent four years working in a sit-down barbecue restaurant…in Kansas City.  I’m picky about my barbecue.  Picky.  Not just any joint will do.  And well, I almost always pick the mom and pop places over a chain.  But darnnit if this place didn’t serve some darned good food!    And bonus?  They made their Sweet Tea the right way: with diabetes-inducing amounts of REAL sugar.  None of that fake stuff like everyplace else this far north.

Food

Pulled pork, spicy cheddar sausage, fried okra and the creamiest mac n cheese…served with an uber-soft dinner roll.  And sweet tea.  I could almost have thought I was back in KC.  And pecan pie…did I mention the pecan pie?!  And while I didn’t partake (I was too stuffed), they have FREE soft-serve…that’s dairy free.  And according to the other bloggers in attendance, it was absolutely delicious.

Free Ice Cream

I think my favorite part of the night was when another of the bloggers (I won’t name names in order to protect the innocent…ahem) asked why there was a huge pile of firewood just inside the front door of the restaurant.  *faceplam*  For the smoker, dearie, the big funny looking block of metal that you can see from the ordering counter.  Yeah?  THAT is what makes your pulled pork and your brisket so tender and flavorful.  😉

Okay, so if you’re in the Detroit-metro area, there are quite a few Dickey’s locations and I strongly suggest checking one out.  I cannot recommend the one in Ferndale enough though, the staff was super-friendly and well, I already told you what I thought of the food!  Added bonus?  Kids eat free on Sundays at all locations.  (We’re now a family of seven, gotta pay attention to these things!)

Kids Eat Free Sundays

If you’re heading to Ferndale, here’s a coupon for you to use – a BOGO (buy one adult entree and 2 drinks, get one adult entree free), as well as $5 off the purchase of an XL Family Pack. (Because barbecue served family style is definitely the way to go!)  Both are valid at the Ferndale, MI location only and expire on November 15, 2014. You can either print the coupon out or show it on your mobile device while ordering.

Also for Ferndale only: you can text DICKEYS934 to 25328, and you will receive a text to get a FREE fountain drink in a big yellow cup, with a purchase.
