Raise your hand if you’re a baking purist. Or something of one?
Don’t get me wrong, I LOVE (like sparkly heart emoticon L-O-V-E) my stand mixer, but there are a few things I make that I absolutely insist be done by hand. Muffins and scones, especially. My favorite mixing bowl, and only a wooden spoon will do. And if I’m going to all of that trouble, you bet your britches, I am only using REAL BUTTER.
If it were up to me, we’d only ever have real butter in the house. But, alas, there’s this other adult in the house who disagrees…and that whole all things equal in marriage thing…he wants something “spreadable.” Bah. Fine. I’ve just turned a blind eye and let him pick his poison and I pretend it’s not in my fridge. 😉
But in the back of my mind, you know I’m always on the look out for a better alternative to whatever he’s grabbing off the shelf.
So can you imagine my excitement when I found out I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter!® got a makeover and is made from real, simple ingredients – 100% taste, 0% artificial preservatives. It’s made with a blend of plant-based oils, purified water and a pinch of salt. And bonus? It’s first spread from Unilever in the U.S. to be made from non-GMO sourced ingredients. The taste hubby loves, the ingredients list that I’m comfortable with, and no more listening to him complain about tearing the bread as he tries to butter it. I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter!® for the WIN!
And allow me a small soapbox really quick, but I never bought into the whole “fats are bad, eat all the fat-free things” hype. Sorry, but just…no. Our bodies need fats…but we need the right fats from the right things. I am absolutely thrilled to see food manufacturers coming around to to this. The plant base oils are providing lots of HEALTHY fats, with 0g of trans fats. (And I’ll admit that even my real-butter loving self loves that I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter!® has 70% less saturated fat than the real thing.)
Anyway, back to the scones…it’s no secret I like to experiment in the kitchen. And scones is one of those things I’m a traditionalist about, so I figured it would be the ultimate test for me. (Oh, except maybe pie crust…) I mean, you have to get that perfectly crumbly texture with the butter and dry stuff or it just doesn’t turn out right. Even with real butter, if it’s not just the right temp, everything can go terribly wrong.
Guess what? I Can’t Believe It’s Not Butter!® worked perfectly in my scones! Just the right texture and was super easy to blend right into the flour and such. Another win!
And for your nom-nom-noming pleasure, here’s my awesome recipe for Strawberries & Cream Scones!
